Can Jean Vacuum Her House With A Hoover?

Friday 31 October 2008 @ 12:47 am

Jean wanted to vacuum the living room last Saturday. One reason was because Rick, her handyman husband, had just bought her a brand spanking new Hoover vacuum cleaner. Jean was extremely happy about that because her mother had taught her how to clean the house and vacuum the carpet with her Hoover vacuum cleaner way back in the sixties.

Jean’s mother had also learned from her mom, Jean’s grandmother, way-way back in the forties. So you might say that the Barkerstone family was a Hoover vacuum clan.

However, that particular Saturday Jean was not making much progress with the rugs and carpet. She started vacuuming the way she had learned from her mom, but nothing was happening. She would go over and over little pieces of trash, but her new Hoover vacuum just would not pick up anything.

Imagine her surprise when she discovered that Rick, needing something to put some new sweet potatoes in for Jean’s brother, had borrowed her vacuum bag. Of course, he was going to put it back later, but had somehow forgot.

The moral of this story is this. Don’t plan to vacuum your house on Saturday with your new Hoover vacuum when your husband is working in the garden with your brother. Huh?

Landscaping Design; Know the Basics

In landscaping, the success of your project doesn’t only depend on how beautiful are the plants that you are planning to include, how complete are your tools and supplies and how many tips and information you have. Understanding landscaping design and its principles is a very important factor that you have to keep in mind if you want to see your garden beautifully landscaped.

Here are the basic principles that you have to remember when choosing your landscaping design;

Harmony? This is the main factor that you have to think about in a landscape design. You can do this by grouping alike garden elements together; including plants, garden decorations or lights. Try to create a big, single design out of the groups of plants or decors. You can group together elements with the same height, colors, textures and sizes.

Balance? If your landscaping design has balance, you can expect a great output. You see, anything with balance or equality can be very beautiful. Example of this is symmetrical balance and asymmetrical balance:

Symmetrical? with equal space and wherein garden elements match this space.

Asymmetrical? this is a mix of similar elements in one side and different elements on the other

Simplicity? this is a very common principle in most art and design. And if you’re just beginning to get the hang of landscaping, this is the best principle that you could follow. In this case, you can opt for simple elements like choosing few colors and plants as well as other decorations and lights.

Color? Of course, all garden will not be as beautiful as they are without color. Color is the one that brings life to everything that you have in your garden. You can apply some color principles in your garden such as choosing colors that make things look closer. In this case, the colors reds, oranges and yellows are perfect.

If you want, you can opt for colors which give you cool feeling like blues, greens and pastel colors. These colors make object look farther. Don’t forget to include background colors such as blacks, whites and greys. They are the colors that best compliments the bright colors of your garden.

Lines? choosing the line pattern wherein you will arrange your plants and garden decors is important. This is where the flow and contour of your garden depends.

Transition? in whatever you do, transition should be gradual and should look natural so you won’t experience any bugging hassles. This is also true with landscaping design. Natural transition is necessary in your landscape design because any abrupt or radical changes in the design will not look good. Like, if you are planting plants with different height; you should not plant a taller plan immediately beside a small plant. It would look much better to plant mid-sized plants in between them.

Proportion? when planning your landscaping design, it is best to organize your garden elements in relation to the size, color and types. Shelter Pets: Pet Adoption Myths

Wednesday 15 October 2008 @ 7:18 pm

Pet adoption is a great way of getting pets in a much less price. Pet adoption is also a great way of taking care and proving homes for pets and animals that have been left or sometimes even abused by their previous owners.

Adopting pets from shelters just charge an adoption fee which is very far from the regular prices of animals in pet stores. Adoption fees range from $35 to $200 and almost always include medical treatment like vaccines, deworming, and spaying (neuter). There are even shelters that offer follow up veterinary services to ensure that pets remain healthy and able to get the necessary vaccines.

Animal shelters provide great choices for adoptable pets. Shelters not only have adult animals, but they also have kittens and puppies that a pet parent can choose from. However there are some myths about animal shelters and why it is not a good place to adopt from.

Many people believe that pets in shelters have behavioural problems. It is important to remember that these animals have bad experiences from their previous owners. They might have experienced neglect and abuse. Animals in shelters normally exhibit minor behavioural problems. Some of these pets may be scared while others can be excited. Animals that show major behavioural problems are not put up for adoption.

Animal shelters perform screen test to know the temperament of animals in the shelters. The shelters try to get as much information they could get from the animals?previous owners. Soon-to-be pet parents are happier and at ease to know that their new pet has healthy and friendly temperament.

Since these animals have been neglected, abused and abandoned, the next parent should display more patience to train them. Also since these pets already know and encountered difficult hardships they display more loyalty and devotion to their new owners. There are some pet parents who have adopted from shelters saying that their pets are more loyal and loving than other pets.

Another shelter myth says that pets from shelters and pounds are mature animals and cannot be trained. Most pets in shelter are older animals but there are also kittens and puppies that is available for adoption.

Adoptable animals from shelters can be trained like other animals. The important thing during training is to be consistent, patient and understanding. Animals (regardless if they are in shelter or in homes) respond to good, effective, loving and humane training techniques.

There are shelters that offer the new pet parent the opportunity to participate in obedience training and pet parenting classes. These sessions serve as a transition period for the pet and the parent to bond together.

It is commonly believed that pets in animal shelters are inferior to purebred animals. According to the Humane Society of the United States there is an average of 25 to 30 percent of purebreds in animal shelters.

Also, mixed bred animals are not inferior to purebred animals. Animal shelters have pets that are healthier and have better temperaments than purebred. Interested pet parents just have to talk to the shelter and provide the what kind of behaviour they would like to have in their pets. Mixed bred pets oftentimes exhibit traits of several breeds. If a pet parent like to have a purebred because of its temperament, the shelter would likely have a mixed bred that exhibits the qualities of the purebred.

Going to a shelter for a pet adoption is a great way of helping animals in need in a much affordable and economic way.
